Secret Machines - Lightning Blue Eyes

Secret Machines – Lightning Blue Eyes

Chris George

Prog rock’s on its self-indulgent way back, with bands like The Mars Volta, ¡Forward, Russia! and Secret Machines set to reclaim the Most Pretentious Rock crown from the indie crowd.

Secret Machines’ latest single, “Lightning Blue Eyes” is up-tempo rock, yet dream-like at heart. It isn’t hugely original or distinctive, but it’s still catchy and very likable. It’s not particularly proggy – i.e.: the bridge isn’t three minutes of feedback – which needn’t be a bad thing, except it doesn’t display Secret Machines’ full potential.

But then songs don’t need to be shockingly pretentious to be good, and “Lightning…”, is very good indeed.

8/10
